A Second Generation Christian with a Boring Testimony

I used to think that I had a really boring testimony. For as long as I can remember, I have spent my life in the church, going to Sunday school and Sunday morning church services, attending VBS, hearing Bible stories as they were acted out on felt boards, watching Veggie Tales, and memorizing scripture for Awanas. (That's me on the far right in my Easter dress.) I remember praying the prayer of Salvation alone one morning on my day bed at the age of 6 and the absolute reassurance I felt after that moment. That moment is so special to me, but I never felt that my story was powerful enough to relate to anyone.

A few weeks back, Philip was invited to speak at his home church to update them about his ministry here in Indianapolis and really to give his testimony. He stood up in front of the church and said, “Well I am here today to tell you I have a really boring testimony – and I blame you for that.” He spoke in jest, but it really struck me. Like me, Philip had also grown up his entire life in the church. He had uncles, great uncles and a grandfather who were all ministers in the church. He didn’t have a difficult life and never had a “hit rock bottom”, “180°” “come to Jesus” moment. But his testimony and my testimony are beautiful testaments to a living, breathing church—a church that has walked beside us our entire lives to encourage us and strengthen our faith, a church that has ensured that we have ‘boring testimonies.’

Fooducate: the education of food

I am on a 6 month diet with my coworkers and have really been striving to eat healthier and to exercise more regularly. (Yes – there is money involved, so that helps to stir up my motivation.) When I walk into the grocery store, I have a real desire to choose foods that are healthy for me, the problem is - I don’t always know which foods those are.

There are so many health food-ish labels, that I have a hard time figuring out the difference between what is actually good for me versus what is seemingly good for me. There are so many labels: low fat, low sodium, no fat, low in sugar, organic, whole wheat, whole grain, 100 calories, all natural, and the list goes on. I have come to find out however, that just because a food item has one of these “nutrition” labels, does not mean that it’s actually good for me.

I just wish I could walk into a grocery store and there be beacons of light or gold stars shining on each of the real health food items. I would be happy to buy it and eat it if I knew what “it” was.

Well – introducing Fooducate. One of my coworkers informed me of this amazing app a few months ago. Fooducate is a letter grading system for food. You simply scan the barcode of a food item with your phone, and the app gives it a letter grade on a scale of A to F. It not only gives you the food’s grade, it also explains why it gave the item that grade, tells you the grade range for food items in that category, and gives you suggestions of similar food items that are even healthier.
