Fooducate: the education of food

I am on a 6 month diet with my coworkers and have really been striving to eat healthier and to exercise more regularly. (Yes – there is money involved, so that helps to stir up my motivation.) When I walk into the grocery store, I have a real desire to choose foods that are healthy for me, the problem is - I don’t always know which foods those are.

There are so many health food-ish labels, that I have a hard time figuring out the difference between what is actually good for me versus what is seemingly good for me. There are so many labels: low fat, low sodium, no fat, low in sugar, organic, whole wheat, whole grain, 100 calories, all natural, and the list goes on. I have come to find out however, that just because a food item has one of these “nutrition” labels, does not mean that it’s actually good for me.

I just wish I could walk into a grocery store and there be beacons of light or gold stars shining on each of the real health food items. I would be happy to buy it and eat it if I knew what “it” was.

Well – introducing Fooducate. One of my coworkers informed me of this amazing app a few months ago. Fooducate is a letter grading system for food. You simply scan the barcode of a food item with your phone, and the app gives it a letter grade on a scale of A to F. It not only gives you the food’s grade, it also explains why it gave the item that grade, tells you the grade range for food items in that category, and gives you suggestions of similar food items that are even healthier.
