The Last Few Weeks

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. I have felt like I have been running a marathon and I am just now trying to catch my breath – figuratively and literally. (I have had a cold for the last two weeks and breathing has been a bit of a struggle.) Here is a quick rundown of my last few weeks.

1.)

Two weeks ago, I finished the last class of my undergraduate career. I did officially graduate in May of 2012, but I double majored in college. Instead of getting one degree with a double major listed, I was bound and determined to get two degrees. This meant jumping through a few loop holes in the system. After much debate and planning with the ladies in the registrar’s office, it was determined that I would withhold from taking one class – Spanish II, until after graduation. During the following commencement year, I could take this class, transfer the credit back to Olivet and get degree number 2! I took the class over the summer. This was a bit of a challenge since I took Spanish 1 the first semester of my freshman year, but with the help of my ever so talented husband, I finished the class!

I performed in a dance at Grace Community Church. I grew up dancing – mostly ballet and contemporary and did worship dance at my church as a child/teen. I messed around with a few classes in college, but nothing serious. I had been looking for an adult ballet class to attend just for fun when my friend told me about the dance ministry team at her church. She said they were looking for more dancers for a baptismal piece and wanted me to join. I had about 5 weeks to learn the whole piece and appreciated the patience of the instructor to help work through my rusty skills. I realized just how much I missed dancing in the process. I should be getting the video of the piece soon and I will post it when I do.

I became an aunt x2! My brother and sister-in-law gave birth to their second little boy – Asher Timothy Merki – on Saturday, August 3rd! Philip was the first family member to see Benjamin when he was born, and he was bound and determined to be the first to see Asher as well. After my Saturday evening performance, we took a quick trip down to Bourbonnais to see little Asher. (He hadn’t even been officially named by the time we got to see him.) He was so perfect and we fell in love right away. We didn’t get to stay very long unfortunately, but were so glad to get to hold him for just a little while.

I took my first official business trip to New York. Six of our international students have been in the U.S. this summer attending a leadership camp in Indiana. Their camp ended the weekend of August 3rd. We decided to fly the kids to New York to visit with some of our biggest supporters – RCI and Wyndham. The kids were treated like celebrities during their entire visit and even got to explore New York City and go to a Broadway Show. It was a great experience. Sending the kids back home after the trip, however, was very emotional, especially for those kids who graduated this year. I will write more about this later.

After a busy few weeks, Philip and I got to go to spend a few days on Lake Michigan with Philip’s family. We had a blast! The Merki’s rented a house on the lake and our room had a balcony view. We got to sleep in every morning, sip coffee on the beach, go jet skiing, go to Michigan’s Adventure, and just spend some quality time with family and relax. It was wonderful, but too short.
